A Muslim leader in Zamboanga City said there is nothing to question with the military's decision to pursue Abu Sayyaf Group fighters in Basilan and Sulu even during Ramadhan.

Alim Muhaimin Sakili, Director of the Moro Islamic Institute in Zamboanga City, said he does not believe that the military will be disturbing the observance of Ramadhan should they pursue the bandits involved in a series of atrocities in the South.

"Kahit sino, kahit saan, kapag nakagawa ng kasalanan, dapat lang habulin," Sakili said.

In a message, Amirah Lidasan of the Suara Bangsamoro said, "Inshaallah, sana po ay matigil na ang military operations sa Moro areas bilang pag-respeto sa mga kapatid naming nagpupuasa."

Lidasan's message followed the Armed Forces' announcement that there will be no let up in the operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro reiterated that the government's declaration for the suspension of military operations is only for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), adding that lawless groups like the Abu Sayyaf are not entitled to a SOMO.

Muslims all over the country started to observe Ramadhan past midnight of Saturday following the declaration made by Al-Alem Murad Amanodin, Ulama League of the Philippines Mufti, that today is the first day of the holy month. 

For one whole month, Muslims are required to abstain from food and sex. They should also pray at least five times a day, which is called the "Sambahayang."  Those who can't comply with these requirements due to age or illness should feed their less fortunate brothers and sisters for a month.

Sakili said those who make these sacrifices will be rewarded. "Lahat ng swerte ng mga Muslim, nandito sa buwan na ito," Sakili explained.

The fasting and the prayer aim to develop discipline among the Muslims to follow the teachings of Allah. "Nararapat ito para matuto ang mga Muslim na sumunod sa utos ni Allah at para di sila gumawa ng masama."
