Ferry runs aground in Leyte
MANILA, Philippines – Passengers and crew members of a ferry that ran aground off the coast of Leyte Tuesday night have been rescued, an official of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
OCD Eastern Visayas director Rey Gozon said authorities were able to rescue all 191 passengers and undisclosed number of crew of the Super Shuttle Ferry 5, which ran aground in the vicinity of Merida town at around 11:30 p.m. after experiencing engine trouble.
The passengers were transferred to Super Shuttle Ferry 23 and brought safely to Ormoc.
“The passengers were transferred (to another ferry) and brought back to Ormoc. They arrived (Ormoc) safely…No one was hurt. The 191 passengers are okay,” said Gozon.
Gozon said a tugboat of the Smelting Associated Smelting and Refining Corp came to the aid of the ship but it remained stuck in Merida, as of posting.
