MANILA - An estimated 10,000 people are expected to march from Fuente Circle to the Plaza Independencia in Cebu to take part in a signature campaign for a People's Initiative to abolish pork scheduled at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, who will join locals in signing the document, called the movement a noble act and an expression of patriotism.

He welcomed the Supreme Court's (SC) decision to declare the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) as unconstitutional.

Earlier today, the church-backed people's Congress approved the draft of the People's Initiative that will kick off the nationwide drive to gather 6 million signatures that will keep government from redefining "savings" and stop the President's discretionary powers on the use of lump sum funds.

The People's Initiative bill aims to rid the nation of the corrupt system, patronage that undermines the principle of separation of powers, check and balance, transparency and accountability.

The people's Congress said signature campaigns will be conducted in all public places in order to acquire 6 million signatures within the year.

They hope to gather 10 percent of the total number of registered voters in the country with at least 3 percent of legislative districts to put the People's Initiative to a vote in a referendum.

The move comes just days before anti-pork groups gather in Luneta for another rally on Monday, August 25.
