MANILA -- Two soldiers were abducted by members of the New People's Army (NPA) last week, a military official said Thursday.

Major Christian Uy, spokesperson of the 4th Infantry Battalion, said 2 soldiers of the Army's 8th Infantry Battalion were abducted last August 22 in Barangay Buntungon, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon, while they were performing community service.

The soldiers were identified as Private First Class (PFC) Jerrel Yorong, and PFC Marnel Cinches.

Uy added that the 2 soldiers were on board a motorcycle when they were intercepted by 4 armed men.

1Lt. Norman Tagros, civil military operations officer of the Army's 8th Infantry Battalion, confirmed that Cinches and Yorong were abducted by members of the NPA under Lorna Pekabalyo, alias Ading, and Noel Gabuki, alias Ceasar.

"They were initially reported as missing so we immediately sent recovery team and another team to gather information...Based on our information, their group (Pekabalyo and Gabuki) is the one holding our soldiers," Tagros said.

"Also, they also admitted it (abduction)," added Tagros, referring to the admission made by Alan Juanito, spokesman of the NPA in Northern Central Mindanao.

Juanito said the NPA is checking if the two "prisoners of war" are facing charges or complaints from the people.

Tagros said military forces are continuing with the rescue and recovery operations for the abducted soldiers.

The Army has yet to receive information on the whereabouts of the abducted soldiers. -- with a report from Fred Dellava, DZMM
