LTFRB to suspend franchise of bus in Quezon accident
MANILA, Philippines - The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is set to issue on Tuesday an order suspending the franchise of the bus involved in Sunday's accident in Quezon province.
Five people died and more than 40 others hurt when a passenger bus traveling from Tacloban, Leyte to Quezon City lost its brakes and fell into a ravine in Pagbilao, Quezon province early Sunday. (Click here for story on accident.)
Speaking on DZMM Teleradyo on Monday, LTFRB Chair Dante Lantin said they will also conduct inspections on other buses of the company.
"Na-verify namin na may prankisa yung unit involved ng CUO Transport. Sa 2014 pa mag-eexpire involving 10 units nung franchise. Kaya't bukas mag-iissue yung LTFRB ng suspension order at i-oopen yung units for inspeksyon," he said.
Amid the string of bus accidents in recent weeks, Lantin said it is up to operators to ensure na "dapat mag-inspect ng units, hindi lang inspeksyon, but they have to have maintenance facilities para magawa yung bagay na ito."
Lantin said the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is scheduled to meet with bus operators this week to see how bus companies can improve their facilities and operations.
"May pa-meeting and DOTC sa bus operators sa September 1. Ito'y bibigyan ng attention on how to improve, the requirements of maintenance of facilities, [in order] to complete their facilities."
Authorities continue to probe other road accidents involving buses early this month, including the August 18 incident, when more than 42 people died when a bus fell into a ravine in Benguet province.
Mechanical failure has been blamed for the tragedy.
