Evacuation urged in 6 S. Leyte towns
MANILA, Philippines – Residents in 6 coastal towns in Southern Leyte were urged to evacuate their homes Friday night after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Philippines.
Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado said he instructed the mayors of 6 coastal towns to order a mandatory evacuation to their residents.
Mercado said the residents were evacuated to several covered basketball courts located on higher ground.
Mercado said the earthquake that struck at 8:47 p.m. caused temporary power failure. Power has been restored, as of posting.
No casualties or damages have been reported, according to the governor.
A tsunami alert warning 3 was raised by Phivolcs in following provinces: N. Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte & Sur.
