Quake damage climbs to P14.2M: NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The cost of damage that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar on Friday night has already reached P14.2 million, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

The NDRRMC said this is based on the latest reports from the local agencies in the areas hit by the strong quake.

The NDRRMC said Region 8 was the most affected by the quake, with estimated total damage in the region at P12.8 million. This includes the road cracks in Buyayawan Bridge in Mercedes, Eastern Samar; Barangay Cansuroy Bridge in San Julian, Eastern Samar; San Pedro Quinapundan Bridge and Sulat Bridge.

Over 20 houses were also wrecked while 50 were partially damaged in General McArthur, Eastern Samar.

There were also cracks in the flooring of the Abreeza Mall in Davao City.

Even the public market in San Isidro, Surigao del Norte was not spared.

Furthermore, the NDRMMC said the cost of damage in landing and riprap in Barangay Alipao is now more than P500,000.

As of posting, the electricity in Tacloban City and the entire provinces of Leyte, Eastearn Samar, Siargao Island and Surigao City have been restored.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that 271 aftershocks have been recorded since the quake. -- Reports from dzMM
