3 die in Quirino tunnel accident
MANILA, Philippines – Three gold diggers died while trapped inside a mining tunnel in Saguday town, Quirino province, police said Wednesday.
Authorities identified the fatalities as Manuel Ignacio, Jimmy Pableo and Mark Anthony Pableo, residents of Barangay La Paz.
Search and rescue teams retrieved Ignacio’s body around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Residents said Ignacio rushed to the mining tunnel to save his father. After carrying his father out of the tunnel, he came back for Jimmy Pableo, his godfather.
Ignacio and his godfather failed to return. The body of Pableo's nephew, Mark Anthony, was retrieved on Tuesday.
One of the 5 surviving local miners said the land is owned by the Ignacio family. He said they have been digging the tunnel for almost 8 months hoping to find gold.
The survivor said they were in pumping water into the 100-feet deep tunnel when they inhaled something.
Authorities said the victims could have died from gas poisoning. -- Harris Julio, ABS-CBN Cagayan Valley

it's called Carbon Monoxide
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas
that is very lethal.
It's sad that they don't have any idea or the right
gadget before going deep into that tunnel. Kahit gaano
ka katapang wala kang laban kasi 3 langhap lang yan patay
ka agad.
I'm sorry for their loss, hopefully someone will make them
aware about that kind of stuff bago sila pumasok sa mga deep
tunnel or caves.
