Soldier killed in Capiz clash
MANILA, Philippines – Members of the New People’s Army (NPA) had an encounter with the 61st Infantry Battalion transpired in the mountains of Barangay Tacayan Tapaz, Capiz ar around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Sixteen members of 61st Infantry Battalion were resting in one of their hide outs when approximately 20 NPA members ambushed the government troops which resulted in a 30-minute exchange of fires.
Private First Class Maximo Maculbacol was hit in the upper left chest in the encounter. He was airlifted to Roxas Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival in the hospital.
"Estimated mga 200 to 300 meters lang ang distance between the troops and the rebels nang nangyari ang encounter,” Major Charles Peralta, executive officer of 61st Infantry Battalion, said.
Peralta said Barangay Tacayan Tapaz is considered as one of rebel-infested communities and is closely monitored by Armed Forces.
The Philippine Army already called additional troops to augment hot pursuit operation in the area after the ambush.
“Armed Forces still verifying information if there were casualty among rebels who immediately fled away in neighboring barangays of Barangay Tacayan,” Peralta said.
