The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) raid on Zamboanga City left the key port city in the south like a ghost town.
At least 6 people were killed and 24 others were wounded following skirmishes between government troops and MNLF rebels.
Reports said the MNLF rebels were holding 200 hostages in Brgy. Kasanyangan and 20 others in Brgy. Sta. Catalina, Zamboanga City.
At least 300 residents were forced to flee their homes at around 11 p.m. Sunday after MNLF forces clashed with government troops in Barangays Mariki and Rio Hondo.
Some 600 evacuees from Arena Blanco and Rio Hondo are now taking shelter at a grandstand and 847 more at the Tetuan Central School, Tetuan Parish Church, and Talon-Talon National High School.
Barangay Rio Hondo residents said the MNLF troops began arriving in the area Sunday morning and started building up forces later in the evening.
