MNLF rebels fired mortars near pier
MANILA – Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels fired mortar bombs near the pier of Zamboanga City Tuesday morning, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.
Commodore Leo Laroya, PCG Zamboanga district commander, said the MNLF fired at least two mortars that landed in the water about 100 meters away from the PCG headquarters.
This prompted the PCG to order all sea craft in the pier to dock in another pier to avoid destruction.
Shipping activities in the Moro Gulf are currently banned due to the ongoing standoff between the MNLF and government forces.
The Zamboanga City government believes some 200 MNLF rebels are currently in the city, with at least 170 civilians being held hostage and used as "human shields." - report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
