Red Cross doc wounded as fighting rages in Zambo
MANILA -- A mortar round was reportedly fired by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) group under Nur Misuari near the area where members of the media and the Philippine National Red Cross were on standby in Zamboanga City Friday afternoon, a radio dzMM report said.
DZMM reporter Edwin Sevidal said he saw at least six people fall to the ground following the mortar explosion along Lustre Street in Barangay Santa Catalina, Zamboanga City.
"Nakita kong bumulagta ang ilang mga kababayan natin," he reported.
The wounded include government troops, a Red Cross staff and media.
Sevidal also reported that snipers from the MNLF group also fired several shots.
He said many members of the Red Cross and media have started to retreat following the incident.
Philippine National Red Cross Secretary Gwendolyn Pang has temporarily ordered the pullout of volunteers in the area, citing the increasing conflict between the MNLF and government security forces.
According to the Red Cross, one doctor was hit by a stray bullet. -- With report from Ricky Velasco, dzMM
