Consecutive quakes hit N. Samar

MANILA, Philippines – Northern Samar was struck with consecutive magnitude 5.4 earthquakes Saturday afternoon and evening.

The first quake occurred at 3:03 p.m., with the epicenter located 88 kilometers north-east of the town of Mapanas with a depth of 21 kms.

Intensity 2 was felt in Mapanas, while intensity 1 was felt in Tacloban City.

At 6:26 p.m., another magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck.

The epicenter of the second quake was located 64 kms north-east of Mapanas with a depth of 35 kms.

Intensity 4 was felt in Mapanas, Gamay and Lapinig, while intensity 3 was felt in Tacloban City, Borongan, General McArthur and San Policarpo in Eastern Samar.

Both quakes were tectonic in origin.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquakes are still part of the aftershocks of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that hit Eastern Samar last August 31.

No damage was reported after the consecutive earthquakes.
