Bay in Tacloban positive of red tide
TACLOBAN CITY – The Marine Biotoxin Laboratory based in Palo town, found out that the Cancabato Bay in Tacloban City is positive for red tide.
According to center chief Imelda Siervert, the toxicity level of shell meat samples went beyond the normal level of 40 microrganism saxitoxin per 100 grams.
Sievert said on Tuesday morning that the toxicity level of shell meat samples reached 90-microrganism saxitoxin per 100 grams.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Department of Agriculture, Department of Health and the City Government of Tacloban have been informed of the laboratory results.
“We advice the public to not eat mussel or ‘tahong’ that are from Cancabato Bay and even some types of shellfish. It’s not safe to eat,” said Sievert.
The public, in addition, was told that fresh fish from Cancabato Bay must be washed and cleaned thoroughly before cooking.
The laboratory said it will continue its efforts of monitoring the situation.
