'Lawin' now a typhoon

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm Lawin has intensified into a typhoon as it moved closer to the provinces of Samar, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, typhoon Lawin was last spotted 330 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar.

It has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up 150 kilometers per hour.

Lawin continues to traverse the northwest direction at 7 kilometers per hour.

Signal number one is raised over Eastern Samar, Northern Samar and Western Samar.

Authorities already warned residents living in low lying and mountainous areas in the Samar provinces against against possible flashfloods and landslides.

PAGASA said Lawin is likely to make landfall at the tip of Northern Luzon.

It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility either Thursday or Friday.
