MANILA, Philippines – Local officials have implemented a smoking ban in public areas, government offices and public transportation in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.
The use of plastic bags has also been prohibited in the province, especially in public markets.
The campaign is in line with the province’s “brown revolution” launched in August, in an effort to keep the beaches of Puerto Galera free from pollution.
According to Mayor Hubert Dolor, tons of garbage are collected in the province everyday, mostly plastic and styrofoam.
Dolor added that smoking will only be allowed in designated areas. -- Report from Dennis Datu, radio dzMM
