Zambo siege death toll rises to 140
MANILA - A total of 140 people have died in the siege of Zamboanga City since fighting began more than two weeks ago, the military said Tuesday.
At least 110 Moro National Liberatiion Front (MNLF) members loyal to Nur Misuari have allegedly been killed in clashes with government troops.
Security forces captured 93 MNLF gunmen while 45 others surrendered, the Armed Forces said.
Soldiers and police also recovered 93 guns from the rebels.
The military has sustained 13 casualties, with 148 other soldiers wounded in action.
Five police officers have died in the fighting, while 12 civilians have been killed.
A total of 182 hostages have been rescued from the hands of the MNLF in the city, the military said.
Police freed 6 of the hostages on Tuesday, while another Army official died during a clash in the city.
