82 fatalities in Rizal due to 'Ondoy' - governor
MANILA -- The death toll from the onslaught of tropical storm “Ondoy” (international code name Ketsana) rose to 82 in Rizal province alone as of Sunday evening, said the province's governor.
Rizal Gov. Casimiro Ynares III also told dzMM radio that 45 people are still missing in the province which is one of the areas hardest hit by Ondoy.
“We have 37,570 affected families in our province, that’s a total of 263,224 individuals,” Ynares III said in a dzMM interview.
Ynares said out of 188 villages in Rizal, 80 were badly affected.
He also assured that rescue and relief operations are ongoing to address the needs of the people of Rizal province.
“Ang rescue operations po natin ay concentrated sa Cainta samantalang ang relief operations naman ay sa bayan ng San Mateo, Montalban at Cainta,” said Ynares.
He said that so far, they have evacuated people in Antipolo, San Mateo and Taytay.
“Sa Antipolo ang mga nilikas po namin doon ay dulot ng landslide. Sa bayan naman ng San Mateo na-evacuate na po namin nadala namin sila sa mga paaralan at mga covered courts. Sa bayan ng Taytay wala na rin pong baha kaya nailikas na rin po natin sila sa evacuation centers,” said Ynares.
He also cited the help of private individuals who lent their rubber boats especially in operations that were hampered by floods that were slow to subside.
In its 6 p.m. report on Sunday, the National Disaster Coordinating Council have only took into account 42 casualties in Rizal. Twenty-three of them were in Tanay, 10 in Angono, 5 in Baras, 3 in Montalban, and one in Teresa.
