MANILA, Philippines – The mayor of Cabiao, Nueva Ecija, has called on the national government to assist affected farmers in the town, following the devastation of crops left by Typhoon “Pedring”.

Cabiao Mayor Baby Crespo-Congco said that although the town welcomes assistance in the form of relief goods, officials should prioritize the recovery of farmers whose livelihoods were affected.

The mayor said at least 70% agricultural products in Cabiao were destroyed by floods.

“The main problem is the recovery of our farmers because as of now, at least 70% ang total damage namin in agricultural products. I hope the national government, the provincial government and our congressman will help us here,” Congco told ANC’s “World Tonight” on Wednesday.

“Many farmers were telling us that in a week’s time, they will be harvesting our palay and vegetables, unfortunately, na-hit kami ng typhoon so wala ng pag-asa. Most farmers, inutang lang nila ‘yung kanilang puhunan,” she added.

Congco said that 2 villages in Cabiao -- Bagong Sikat and Santa Isabel -- remain isolated.
