Calumpit flood victims scramble for relief goods
MANILA, Philippines - Residents of Calumpit, Bulacan scrambled to get relief goods on Thursday as their homes remained submerged in floods a week after a devastating typhoon battered their town.
At a relief distribution center in Barangay Gatbuca, tension arose among residents impatiently waiting to get their supplies and local officials who tried to maintain order.
Some angry and hungry victims had a heated exchange with officials who refused to give them relief goods because they failed to present stubs.
A number of them said they hadn't eaten for days. Officials explained the supplies are limited.
Near the barangay hall, several families whose houses are still submerged settled at a basketball court that was turned into an evacuation area. Even the rooftop of the one-story barangay hall is currently occupied by flood victims, who still don't know when they can finally return home.
