MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon "Nina" may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Sunday if it is to maintain its current speed and direction, a state weather forecaster said on Thursday.

Speaking to radio dzMM, PAGASA forecaster Chris Perez said Nina still has no direct effect over the country, but will cause large waves along the seaboards of Luzon and Visayas.

PAGASA said as of 5 a.m., Nina was located 700 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan. It was still packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

It was moving west-northwest at 7 kph.

Perez noted that there are less rains now that the southwest monsoon (habagat) season is about to end.

"Mahina na ang habagat. Inaasahan nang magte-terminate ito by the end of the month," Perez said.

Based on PAGASA's 24-hour weather forecast for Thursday, the Bicol region, CALABARZON, Visayas and Mindanao will have occasional light to moderate rains or thunderstorms.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief rainshowers or thunderstorms.
