MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon "Nina" (international name: Prapiroon) has maintained its strength as it continued to move slowly in a north northeast direction.

The typhoon is carrying maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts reaching 195 kph.

As of 4 p.m., weather bureau PAGASA said “Nina” was spotted 650 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes.

The typhoon may slightly intensify in the next 24 hours before it gets to weaken due to its movement across cooler sea surface temperatures and the unfavorable atmospheric environment.

PAGASA earlier said the typhoon may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility either by Monday of Tuesday as its movement is being slowed down by a high pressure area over Siberia.

No storm warning signals have been raised, as of posting. -- With a report from ANC
