Burgos's mother says Arroyo ouster will stop activists' killings, abductions
Editha Burgos, mother of missing activist Jonas Burgos, said extrajudicial killings in the country will stop only after President Arroyo has left Malacañang.
"Kapag nawala si Gloria, matatapos na ito (The killings and disappearances will stop only after President Arroyo is not in power)," Burgos told reporters in Baguio City.
Burgos went to Baguio City to join groups in urging Mrs. Arroyo's administration to surface another alleged enforced disappearance victim, James Balao, founding member of the Cordillera People's Alliance (CPA).
Burgos said Balao could have suffered his son's fate. Balao was reportedly abducted last September 18.
His son, a former student of Benguet State University and a farmer activist, was abducted by military-looking men in Quezon City. The farmer activist has not been seen since.
The Progressive Igorots for Social Action (PIGSA), College Editor's Guild of the Philippines Baguio-Benguet Chapter (CEGP-BB), National Union of Students in the Philippines Baguio Benguet (NUSP), and Anakbayan Baguio-Benguet challenged the present administration to surface Balao as soon as possible.
The group said Balao's case is no longer a simple case of a missing person as they believe the victim was abducted by military men.
Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., Philippine Army spokesman, has denied the military's involvement in Balao's disappearance..
Months before his disappearance, Balao revealed to the media that his family is being monitored by the military. Balao was supposed to travel to Ifugao when abducted.
