Comelec postpones bgy polls in Zamboanga
MANILA - Barangay elections in Zamboanga City are postponed after Moro rebels attacked the city, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Friday.
Barangay polls, however, will push through in Cebu despite the damage caused by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the Visayas last Tuesday.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said he will go to Bohol over the weekend to assess the situation in the province before deciding on whether or not to postpone the barangay elections there. He said the matter will be decided on Monday.
Brillantes said they are open to the idea of putting up makeshift precincts near evacuation centers if it is possible.
Meantime, the first day of the campaign period went off to a loud start. Candidates resorted to the usual gimmicks: jingles, posters, vehicles with loudspeakers and bands to woo voters.
