MANILA, Philippines – Two officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) drowned after the pump boat carrying them sank near Cobrador Island in Romblon Friday.

The victims were identified as DepEd provincial superintendent Eve Pahutag and DepEd employee Grace Mallorca.

Authorities said the El Kapitan vessel carrying 55 teachers came from Simara island and was headed for Romblon when it was hit by huge waves, causing it to sink.

The Coast Guard lost contact with the vessel, prompting Romblon Gov. Eduardo Firmalo to order a search and rescue operation.

The two victims were rushed to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

The other passengers of the boat and its 9 crewmembers were safely rescued. -- Report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
