2,400 cops deployed to ARMM for barangay polls
MAGUINDANAO -- The Police Regional Office - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-ARMM) on Saturday morning sent at least 2,400 cops to the five provinces in the region for the upcoming barangay elections.
In a send-off ceremony held at the Philippine National Police (PNP) - ARMM headquarters in Parang, Maguindanao, PRO-ARMM regional director Chief Supt. Noel delos Reyes said he hopes to have an honest, orderly and peaceful barangay polls on Monday.
Base on the record of the PNP, 1,607 police personnel will serve as special board of election tellers (BETs) in ARMM as replacement for the teachers who declined to serve as BETs due to security reasons.
Of these, 741 came from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and PRO 4-A. They will serve as BETs in Maguindanao.
The PNP said 567 police personnel who came from PRO 10, 11 and 12 will serve in Lanao del Sur while the 300 cops from PRO 9 in Zamboanga City will be deployed to Sulu.
Meanwhile, 848 other police personnel will perform other election duties such as securing the polling precincts and conducting checkpoints.
The PNP said 257 will be deployed to Maguindanao and 615 will be sent to Lanao del Sur.
According to PRO-ARMM, 16 individuals have already been arrested for violating the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) gun ban while 17 firearms have been confiscated.
In the five provinces of ARMM, 483 barangays have been tagged as election hotspots by the PNP: 313 in Lanao del Sur, 55 in Maguindanao, 57 in Basilan, 43 in Sulu and 15 in Tawi-Tawi.
