Total gun ban effective in poll hotspots: police
The chief of the Taclocan City police on Tuesday backed the declaration of a nationwide gun ban during the campaign period, which would help authorities keep peace and order in election hotspots.
"At least if these would be implemented, we could prevent or lessen violence related to politics," Senior Superintendent Manuel Cubillo said in an interview.
The Commission on Elections has yet to issue a resolution calling for a gun ban, which is usually implemented during the campaign period. The campaign period for national polls starts on February 9, 2010 and for local polls on March 26, 2010 until May 8, 2010.
Cubillo said only security details of politicians will be allowed to carry firearms during the elections. "Only two security details per politician are allowed [to carry guns] but it would also depend on how grave the threat is to a politician," he said.
Samar was previously identified as a hotspot during the 2007 election. For the years 2007-2009 a total of 36 extrajudicial killings has been recorded in Western Samar, 11 in Eastern Samar and four in Northern Samar.
