At least 9 people were reported killed after a passenger bus collided with a pickup and fell off a bridge in Cauayan City, Isabela province before dawn Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Roberto Damian, Cagayan Valley regional police director, identified one of the fatalities as Perlito Bautista, driver of a white Toyota Hilux (AEV 350) and resident of Barangay Guyabal, Cauayan City.

Damian said Bautista died after his pick-up collided with a Dagupan bus on a bridge along the national highway of Barangay Tagaran around 3:30 a.m.

The regional police commander said another pick-up -- a red Isuzu DMAX (ZJD 377) -- was involved in the accident. Its driver identified as Mamentino Daturan and passenger Rey Cacal have been rushed to Cauayan Special Hospital.

Damian said the bus fell off the bridge after the collision.

He said at least 24 bus passengers have been brought to separate hospitals in the city. Six more passengers have been confirmed killed and two more were reported dead, he added.

The bodies of the six passengers have been brought to the Funeraria Carbonal Cauayan.

A radio report said police were still retrieving passengers from the bus as of this posting.

Investigators have yet to determine how the bus fell off the bridge. With reports from Noel Alamar, radio dzMM and Harris Julio, ABS-CBN Cagayan Valley
