Typhoon ‘Santi’ enters RP area of responsibility

MANILA - Typhoon “Santi” (international codename Mirinae) has entered the Philippine area of responsibility Wednesday evening.

State weather agency Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), in its 10:45 p.m. bulletin said the typhoon was located 1,210 east of Casiguran in Aurora province.

It has maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 170 kph, PAGASA said in its first bulletin on the new weather disturbance.

It said the typhoon is moving west at 24 kph in the general direction of northern and central Luzon.

PAGASA said it forecast the typhoon to be 710 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora by Thursday evening; 250 km east of Casiguran, Aurora by Friday evening and 50 km east of Dagupan City or 30 km south of Baguio City by Saturday evening.

Since the typhoon is still over the Pacific Ocean, the state weather agency has not raised any public storm warning signal yet.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council has been placed on full alert due to the coming typhoon and NDCC chair National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has advised the public to go to cemeteries a day before or after the storm passes for the annual observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days.
