2 killed in poll-day violence in Leyte, Basilan
MANILA – Two people were killed during the barangay elections in Basilan and Leyte on Monday.
In Jaro, Leyte, a husband of an incumbent barangay chairman was killed by unidentified gunmen in Barangay Anibongon at around 7:30 a.m. today.
The victim, identified as Pablo Volcan, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds to his back. His companion, Romeo Anover, is now being treated at a hospital in Tacloban City.
The suspect in Volcan's killing was identified as Claudio Momo, husband of a candidate for chairman in the same barangay.
Police said Volcan and Anover were on their way to Anibongon Elementary School when the shooting occurred.
In Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, a certain Paizal Mohammad, a candidate for councilor in Barangay Bohelebung, was shot by unidentified assailants while he was on board his motorcycle in Sitio Lebbak, also in Bohelebung.
