Barangay candidate killed in Basilan
BASILAN - A candidate for barangay kagawad was killed and one barangay chairperson was injured in shooting incidents in Basilan on election day, police said.
Initial investigation showed that while en route to a polling precinct, Paizal Mohammad was shot by group of armed men in Bohelebung, Tipo-tipo town on Monday morning.
Mohammad was killed on the spot. Police believe politics was behind the attack.
Meanwhile, a barangay chairperson was injured after he was shot by unidentified person in Lamanboringan, Ungkaya Puyan.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Aside from the reported shooting incidents, there were reports of ballot boxes being snatched in the province.
Ungkaya Pukan police said an unidentified voter snatched ballot boxes in barangay Bohesuyak, Ungkayan.
Meanwhile, a resident of Isabela City, Basilan was arrested after he allegedly snatched ballot boxes and throw them into the water.
The suspect was identified as Ersad Pahalwan.
An improvised explosive device placed in a bag was also discovered at the back of a school in Isabela City on Monday afternoon.
Authorities disarmed the bomb.
