Canvassing halted in Leyte due to confusion on bet's nickname
MANILA -- Canvassing in Barangay San Antonio in Dulag town, Leyte had to be suspended Tuesday morning after supporters of a candidate for barangay chairman urged the Board of Election Tellers' (BET) to consider the votes for the candidate's shortened nickname.
Reports indicate that the BET had refused to count votes for Regaldo Argota alias "Jonelpulbo" that contained only his nickname "Jonel."
The BET was firm the poll body allows only one nickname for each candidate.
In this case, Argota's own certificate of candidacy (COC) identifies his nickname as Jonelpulbo.
Argota's supporters raised objections repeatedly as votes for Jonel were discarded.
Canvassing had to be stopped at around 5 a.m. when only about 20 out of over 300 votes had been counted.
Canvassing has yet to resume.
The BET said it is waiting for the Comelec main office's decision on the matter.
Argota, for his part, insisted that among all candidates, he is the only one using the nickname Jonel. Therefore, votes that contained the name Jonel should be counted in his favor, he said. -- Report from Sharon Evite, ABS-CBN News Tacloban; ANC
