MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Coast Guard warned the public against "colorum" or fly-by-night passenger ships and boats that would surface to take advantage of the All Saints' Day long weekend.

Rear Admiral Luis Tuason Jr., vice commander for Coast Guard operations, reminded passengers not to patronize "colorum" inter-island shipping vessels.

He said unregistered ships can endanger the lives of passengers as they do not undergo regular inspection.

The Coast Guard said they will continue monitoring ports to make sure no unauthorized ships can travel as passenger ships to prevent sea accidents.

"Colorum" ships are commonly fishing vessels. They do not provide life vests and rafts, and do not indicate their passenger capacity. -- Report from Noel Alamar, DZMM
