'Santi' leaves 4 dead in Southern Tagalog
Although residents in Quezon province who evacuated before the onset of typhoon Santi already returned to their homes on Saturday morning, most households in the province are still experiencing lack of power supply, as of posting.
Power was cut off Friday night in all municipalities of the third and fourth district, including some areas in the second district as the typhoon made landfall in the northern part of the province. The number of evacuees rose to 1, 118 families or 4, 752 individuals.
Passengers on their way home to Bicol for the All Souls' Day were temporarily stranded in Atimonan because of floods.
It was around 4 a.m. early Saturday morning when went Santi left Quezon and proceeded to Batangas after damaging infrastructures.
Authorities have yet to estimate the cost of damage to three major roads, including the Bridge of Promise, which collapsed in Batangas City, and the Pulong-Pulong bridge in the town of Calaca.
The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) said Lemery-Palico-Balayan road and R. Diokno highway are passable only to light vehicles.
Residents had to be evacuated in Bgy.Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas as waters were neck deep.
A total of 1,094 people were temporarily stranded in Sto.Tomas, Batangas because of floods in Bgy.San Antonio along Maharlika highway ang Bgy. 4.
In Laguna, roads in Lumban and Pagsanjan were temporarily impassable in towns which went under water.
PDCC officer Jun Guidote said a rise in the water level was reported in towns which have been flooded since typhoon Ondoy hit the country last week of Setpember.
Among these towns are Sta. Rosa, Cabuyao, Calamba, Los Baños, Famy, Mabitac, Pakil, Pila, Sta. Cruz and Siniloan..
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 4-A reported that a bridge at the boundary of Magdalena-Majayjay, and Ollabridge near Grotto collapsed. There were also landslides.
In the island of Mindoro, OCD reported no serious damage, and residents who preemptively evacuated are safely back in their homes.
Authorities are still assessing the total damage left by Santi.
Meanwhile, 4 deaths were reported due to typhoon Santi in the Southern Tagalog region.
Edwin Alvarez, 42, drowned in Atimonan, Quezon. Tirso Ramos, 59, died after falling from a rooftop in Cavite.
Margie Taiño, 8 years old, from Pagsanjan, Laguna, drowned. Another casualty has not yet been identified.
Anthony Calderia, a resident of Liliw, has been reported missing.
