MANILA - A strong twister swept through a village in Cavite while the province was being pounded by typhoon Santi (international name Mirinae) on Saturday, damaging at least 50 houses.

Dante Mendoza, village chief of Barangay San Jose in Tarnate town, said the affected villagers have been evacuated and several injured people have been brought to hospital.

Mendoza said the twister struck while the typhoon was pounding the province with strong winds and heavy rains.

The village chief said they have yet to receive assistance from the provincial government, which is being prevented by the typhoon to immediately respond to affected areas.

As of this posting, the typhoon was still pounding the province.

Weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon will also cross Batangas and Mindoro provinces before exiting to the South China Sea by noon.

The province has been placed under public storm warning signal number 3. With a report from Eric Dasta, radio dzMM
