Dad hacks daughter mistaken for 'aswang'
MANILA -- A 17-year-old girl in Barangay Garita, San Enrique, Iloilo City is in critical condition after being hacked by her own father, who claimed he had mistaken his daughter for an "aswang."
According to San Enrique Police Chief Inspector Rogil Morales, the victim, who is mute, went outside the house to go to the restroom at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Her father, 41-year-old Winnie Ratista, did not notice her going out of the house.
Upon her return, Ratista then heard a rustling sound. He said he thought it was because of an aswang, a vampire-like mythical creature in Philippine folklore.
Ratista had already hacked the victim at least four times when he realized that it was his daughter.
Police said the suspect was not drunk when the incident happened. The suspect is also not suffering from mental illness, authorities said.
Police are now waiting for the decision of the family if frustrated parricide charges will be filed against the suspect. -- Report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
