MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard are searching for 20 seamen, after their cargo vessel capsized off the coast of Burgos, Ilocos Norte early Saturday, authorities said.

Hong Kong maritime officials alerted the Philippine Coast Guard, saying that Panamanian-registered MV Oceanic Union made a distress call and declared abandon ship at around 1 a.m.

The vessel is reportedly carrying 20 seamen of still unknown nationality.

Authorities have yet to confirm the status of the seamen.

Barangay officials along the coastal areas were also instructed to notify authorities if they spot the ship’s crew.

According to Lt. Dennis Rapal of the coast guard, the ship may have sunk due to engine trouble or due to rough seas in the area. -- Report from Randy Menor, ABS-CBN News Ilocos
