MANILA - The armed man who claimed he owns a house in Barangay San Nicolas I in Lubao, Pampanga, believed to be owned by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, is actually a member of the Presidential Security Group's (PSG) advance security team, her lawyer said Friday.
"From what I learned, he is a member of the Presidential Security Guard. The President was in Lubao yesterday (Thursday) and I think [part of] her itinerary was that place. All places included in the President's itinerary are usually checked by an advance party," election lawyer Romulo Macalintal clarified in a briefing in Malacañang.
The armed man claimed he owns the house in Barangay San Nicolas I when asked by ABS-CBN News reporter Willard Cheng. The man also nudged the camera of Cheng's crew while taking footage of the house.
Macalintal assured that the gun carried by the PSG man was licensed, and that what he did was part of his training as a member of the PSG.
"Iyong tanong na bakit sinabi ng armed man na siya ang may-ari ng bahay. Well, I think siguro part ng training 'yan ng security (Your question why the armed man claimed he owns the house. Well, I think it's part of their security training)," the lawyer explained.
The ABS-CBN News team went to Lubao on Thursday to check reports of a newly-built house in Barangay San Nicolas I, allegedly owned by President Arroyo. (Read: Does Arroyo own new Lubao house?)
Macalintal said the house is owned by Eva Development Corporation, and the lot is owned by the Diosdado Macapagal Foundation. He said the house was built as a part of a museum for former President Diosdao Macapagal, Mrs. Arroyo's late father.
He said museum hopes to "instill in the minds of the people the memories of President Diosdado Macapagal when he was still alive and what he did for the country."
Mrs. Arroyo's other lawyer, Ruy Rondain, had denied that the house was owned by the Arroyo family.
Rondain earlier said Mrs. Arroyo and First Gentleman Jose Miguel 'Mike' Arroyo used to be part of the Eva Development Corp., which owns the house, "but they divested in 2000."
The lawyer added that the President's declared residence in Pampanga is Calle Cucu, Barangay San Nicolas, Primer 1 in Lubao.
