ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police arrested an alleged deputy commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Saturday afternoon at the Zamboanga International Airport who was reportedly on his way to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for the annual Muslim pilgrimage.
Senior Superintendent Jose Bayani Gucela, Police Regional Office 9 spokesman, identified the MILF leader as Hassan Asnawi. Asnawi is allegedly the deputy commander of the MILF 114th Base Command operating in Basilan.
Gucela said Asnawi was with other Muslim pilgrims who are set to leave for Manila when he was arrested.
Gucela said Asnawi has a pending warrant of arrest issued by Judge Leo Jay Principe of the 9th Judicial Region Branch 1 in Isabela City in Basilan and is reportedly facing 14 counts of murder and 12 counts frustrated murder
Asnawi was allegedly involved in the ambush and beheadings of 14 members of the Philippine Marines in Al-Barka in Basilan during an encounter with MILF rebels last July 10, 2007.
During the incident, 10 soldiers were beheaded.
Gucela said that when arrested, Asnawi was with Mayor Mohammad Kabukisan of Al-Barka town.
Gucela said that during a tactical interrogation, Asnawi admitted that he is a member of the Special Operations Group of the MILF.
He however reportedly denied involvement in the Al-Barka ambush.
Gucela said however that they have witnesses who positively identified Asnawi as one of the attackers.
No verification yet
Meanwhile, a top MILF official said they have yet to verify the personality of Asnawi.
MILF Vice Chair for Political Affairs Ghadzali Jaafar said they have already received the information about the arrest of Asnawi but said that they can not yet give any further statement about it.
With regards to Asnawi admitting that he is indeed a member of the MILF’s special operations group, Jaafar said that as a captive, Asnawi might have only been forced to say what he has admitted.
And the MILF, according to Jaafar, has no special operations group.
Asnawi was still undergoing debriefing by police.
