World War II-era bombs were discovered in Barangay Sta. Maria Itaas in Bauan town in Batangas province Sunday morning.

A Batangas resident accidentally discovered one of the vintage bombs while digging a garbage hole. He immediately reported it to the barangay (village) chairman who then called the attention of Bauan police.

15 policemen were urgently deployed together with five members of the regional bomb squad.

Retrieval operations were still ongoing but at least 150 vintage bombs weighing 20 kilos each have been found together with three sacks of black powder.

Superintendent Ceo Abrenica, Bauan police chief, said they are being extra cautious in removing the unattended bombs because it still poses a danger of exploding when accidentally dropped. The pieces of black powder on the other hand can harm the lungs if set on fire.

Abrenica confirmed that the bombs discovered were from World War II. The bomb squad however was still unable to confirm if the bombs were American or Japanese.

The explosives would temporarily be transferred to the provincial ammunition dump in Batangas.
