MANILA – School officials in Sulu have decided to temporarily suspend the classes of more than 50,000 school children following the beheading on Monday of an abducted elementary school principal in the province.
The Department of Education School Division 1 superintendent issued a memo suspending the elementary and high school classes in the province.
“Napagkasunduan namin dahil nga sa takot na iyon tapos parang nakita ng karamihan na hindi protektado iyong teachers na lumalabas so nag-present sila ng idea na kung puwede hindi na muna sila magre-report,” said Eufrenio Canaria, DepEd Superintendent Division Head District 1.
The memo came a day after the severed head of school principal Gabriel “Bong” Canizares was left near a gasoline station in downtown Jolo. Canizares was the principal of Kanague Elementary School in Patikul.
Suspected Abu Sayyaf members allegedly beheaded their victim because the agreed ransom was not met.
Report said the suspension would also give way for students and school officials to mourn the death of their colleague.
Majority of teachers and principals now fear for their safety because of the incidents of abduction and beheading in the area.
“Hindi na siguro kami pwedeng mag-report sa station namin kasi iyon ang kinakatakutan talaga na baka kami ang next,” said Baset Pawaki, a teacher at the Talipao Elementary School.
Canizares was the 7th teacher to be kidnapped in Western Mindanao. In January 23, three teachers from Landang Gua in Zamboanga were kidnapped. This was followed by the kidnapping of three other teachers from the Bangkaw-Bangkaw Elementary School in Zamboanga Sibugay in March. The six teachers were eventually released after long negotiations.
“Lahat ay ginagawa natin. Magsasampa na tayo ng kaso ngayong araw na ito. Kapag malabas ang mga warrant of arrests ay kukunin na natin ang mga suspects,” said Senior Superintendent Antonio Mendoza, Sulu police chief.
Military spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr. meanwhile, said the Armed Forces and police have increased security measures in the areas, particularly in schools.
“This is not only to assure the safety of the teachers, pero pati na din ang mga estudyante,” Brawner said. Reports from Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News and TV Patrol World
