Badjao girl dies after eating spoiled mussels

A five-year-old girl died and at least 10 members of the Badjao tribe were hospitalized after eating spoiled mussels in Lucena City in Quezon province, radio dzMM reported Friday.
The report said the Badjaos took a bunch mussels that have been thrown by vendors at the Dalahican public market. After eating the spoiled mussels, the victims complained of stomach ache and rushed to the hospital.
Among the victims was five-year-old Aga Lama, who died while being treated by doctors.
Meanwhile, the provincial government of Quezon advised the public to avoid buying mussels from the province that could have been contaminated with red tide.
Public officials said samples of the mussels eaten by the victims had been brought to a local laboratory of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for testing.
In a related incident, at least 30 employees of the Department of Education and the Department of Agrarian Reform were rushed to different hospitals in Dipolog and Dapitan citiez in Zamboanga del Norte due to possible food poisoning.
A radio dzMM report said the employees had just taken their dinner at the Dakak beach resort when they suddenly complained of stomach ache.
The report said some of the employees had been discharged from the hospitals.
The government employees checked in at the world-famous Dakak beach resort for a three-day conference that started last November 12.
