1 killed, 8 hurt in Bulacan fireworks factory blast

MANILA, Philippines - An illegal fireworks factory in Angat, Bulacan exploded Monday night, killing a woman and wounding 8 other people.

Chief Inspector Arwin Tadeo, Angat police chief, said the explosion took place around 6:20 p.m. at a factory operated by couple Allan and Beverly Sarmiento in Sitio Tugatog, Barangay Marungko.

Tadeo said that the blast destroyed the fireworks factory and damaged nearby houses.

He said Linda Reyes, who lives beside the factory, died after a wall collapsed on her. Eight other people, including 3 workers and 5 residents, were hurt in the blast.

The injured victims were identified as Edgardo Padua, Gena Biarcal, Juvilyn Alvarez, Angelita Dizo, Julia Jaspe, Alejandro Cruz, Angelito Cruz and Wiwi Lorenzo.

Tadeo said the factory's operation was illegal.

He said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries will be filed against the operators of the factory. – Reports from Jasmin Romero, ABS-CBN News and Noel Alamar, radio dzMM
