Two suspected members of the New Peoples Army (NPA) in the island province of Catanduanes were killed in an almost forty-five minutes firefight between rebels and the military.

Col. Ariel Bernardo, Army’ 901st Infantry Brigade commander in Albay, said a 12-man team of soldiers were conducting operations in Barangay San Marcos, San Miguel town in Catanduanes when it encountered 20 fully-armed rebels.

The military said it has yet to identify the fatalities.

The military said that recovered from the encounter site were one M16 automatic rifle, one M14 automatic rifle, two hand-held radios and subversive documents.

Bernado said Army troops who were conducting pursuit operations in the area believed some rebels were also wounded because of blood stains in the area.

There were no casualty on the government side. Jose Carretero, ABS-CBN Legazpi
