The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has implemented a total gun ban in Tacloban in preparation for a plebiscite for proposals to turn the city into a highly-urbanized city.
COMELEC Resolution 8515 orders the Tacloban City police to ban gun possession, as well as deadly weapons including explosives and knives.
Superintendent Romulo Cleve Taboso, Tacloban City police, said people entering the city will also be covered by the gun ban.
"Anyone who will enter Tacloban City will need to secure a license [to carry firearms] from the COMELEC," Taboso said.
The gun ban's implementation started Thursday. It will take effect until December 20.
Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez proposed the city's HUC-hood. He said the city should be turned into a congressional district for him to be able to implement projects that would solve their problem in drainage system and water supply.
Romualdez has also said that the HUC-hood would give the city government autonomy from the Leyte provincial government.
The mayor had also denied allegations that he has ambitions to run for a seat in the House of Representatives.
“There is no political agenda here, I just want to simplify things,” the mayor said in a development council meeting attended by 138 village chiefs last September. -- Jenette Fariola-Ruedas, ABS-CBN Tacloban
