Media groups commemorate Maguindanao massacre
MANILA, Philippines – Media groups across the country conducted activities on Wednesday to commemorate the second anniversary of the brutal Maguindanao massacre, where more than 30 journalists were killed.
Journalists have also marked November 23, 2011 as the first International Day to End Impunity.
In Iloilo City, a mass was offered by members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP)-Iloilo.
White balloons were released to the sky to symbolize their call for justice. A candle lighting ceremony took place at 5 p.m., led by the group Karapatan Panay.
In Cebu City, a mass was offered at the Sto. Rosario Parish by media practitioners, who all wore black to commemorate the brutal incident.
The Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists also called on the Aquino administration to prioritize the Maguindanao massacre case.
The same sentiment was echoed by mediamen in central Luzon, who called on the government to fast-track the case against the perpetrators.
Members of the local media of Poblacion, San Fernando marched to the church where a mass was offered.
In Davao, journalists gathered in Forest Lake Cemetery at the tomb of Santos Gatchalian Jr., one of the journalists killed in Maguindanao.
NUJP-Davao also expressed their dismay over what they feel is the slow movement of the trial.
Civic action groups, mediamen and students of Baguio City gathered at the Baguio Convention Center Tree Park to plant 57 trees, symbolizing the 57 bodies recovered in a shallow grave in Barangay Salman, Ampatuan town.
Prosecutors have identified 197 people responsible for the massacre, including members of the Ampatuan clan.
However, over 100 suspects are still at large and at least one alleged conspirator, suspended Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao Governor Zaldy Ampatuan, has yet to be arraigned. -- Reports from John Fernandez, Carmi Cavanlit, Joworski Alipon, Gracie Rutao, Paul Palacio and Gladys Espinola, ABS-CBN News Regional Network
