Devotees flock to Cebu for Calungsod thanksgiving mass
MANILA, Philippines – Thousands of devotees gathered in Cebu City on Friday for a thanksgiving mass for St. Pedro Calungsod.
The national thanksgiving mass is scheduled at 5 p.m., but devotees flocked to the 28-hectare South Road Properties as early as 6 a.m. to join the celebration for Calungsod, who was recently declared as a saint by the Vatican.
Devotees from the northern and southern parts of Cebu are also expected to converge at SRP after a procession.
President Benigno Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar Binay and members of the Catholic hierarchy are expected to attend the thanksgiving mass for Calungsod in the afternoon.
"Pedrito" dolls and other images of the second Filipino saint are also selling well among devotees.
The thanksgiving mass is the culmination of the nationwide pilgrimage of the image of Calungsod. – report from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
