ZAMBOANGA CITY - A retired army official was shot dead allegedly by his son-in-law and his brother Monday morning in Ducson drive in Barangay Kasanyangan in Zamboanga City.
Police reports identified the fatality as Haih Salim, 60 years old. Salim was allegedly shot by his son-in-law, Robert Halil, and his brother identified as Police Officer 1 Salonga Halil.
The dead victim’s wife, who asked not to be identified, said it was almost 7 a.m. when her husband ordered her to get inside and lock the house. She noticed too that Robert and his elder brother, Salonga, were coming in to their house to confront her husband.
“I was really quivering with fear. When my husband shouted, I immediately ran outside, I no longer waited. I was hearing gunshots,” said Salim’s wife in the vernacular.
She further added that the two could have misinterpreted her husband’s reactions when both were seen passing by their home allegedly intoxicated.
The retired Army official’s body was found bloodied and slumped on the floor of his home with multiple gunshot wounds.
The two suspects were also immediately brought to a private hospital for surgery after also sustaining wounds.
Barangay Chairman Tungku Hanapi initiated a dialogue with both sides but admitted he himself is confused with the situation. He said the incident was obviously a result of a family problem that could have resulted before the incident.
They are the only ones who are the victims here. I’m recommending that higher authorities handle this so it can be settled,” Hanapi said in the vernacular.
Police said both sides of the family would still be under surveillance to avoid possible attempts of retaliation.
