Catholic church officials in Bacolod City said they will take steps to stop moves to change the Constitution.

Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra said that the church is against Charter change (Cha-cha) and no one and nothing can change their stand.

Fr. Aniceto Buenafe, head of the Social Action Center of the Diocese, said that by all means of the church they will stop the move to amend the Constitution.

The church officials statements came amid moves of allies of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the House of Representatives to push for charter amendments.

Change system of government
Negros Occidental 5th district representative and presidential brother-in-law Ignacio Arroyo Jr. said however that the church should take care of the souls of the people.

He explained that Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (KAMPI), of which he is a member, has the numbers in the House to go ahead with Cha-cha through a constituent assembly.

He said KAMPI is pushing for Cha-cha to change the system of government from bicameral to unicameral.

"It is high time now to change the Constitution. But we will fight any move to extend the terms," said congressman Arroyo.

He also said that the country needs a parliamentary form of government to move forward.

Buenafe however said he does not believe Congressman Arroyo as the priest said that the president has a credibility problem which makes it difficult for them to believe that she has no plans of staying in power after 2010.
