TACLOBAN CITY – The Commission on Elections office in the city has informed the public that it will start accepting registrants for the 2010 elections on the first Monday of January next year instead of December 2 which was the original schedule.

Lawyer Susan Collamar, city Comelec officer, said that they were granted permission to schedule it next year because of the plebiscite for the reclassification of Tacloban as a highly-urbanized city which is set to be conducted on Dec. 18.

“The schedule was moved so that we can focus on the plebiscite," she said.

The information however failed to reach some Tacloban residents, like Elvie and Alicia, who came to the office Tuesday to register in the hope of voting for the plebiscite.

They soon found themselves sitting outside of the office.

“I feel sad that we could not have the chance to vote for the future of Tacloban,” said Elvie.

But Collamar was quick to clarify that even if residents like the two were able to register, they still could not participate in the plebiscite. She said under Comelec Resolution 8516, only registered voters during the 2007 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections are qualified to vote.
